We're pleased to be able to offer a number of bursary places to any individual who is looking to study for one of our qualifications. 

These awards are based on an assessment of financial need and will take into account the financial circumstances of the charity and the case of the individual fundraiser. Bursaries are only awarded to fundraisers who, in the opinion of the Chartered Institute, will benefit from and contribute greatly to their organisation and the cause it represents.

Bursaries are awarded up to a value of £250 per successful candidate for the Certificate in Fundraising, up to a value of £350 per successful candidate for the Diploma in Fundraising and up to a value of £450 per successful candidate for the International Advanced Diploma in Fundraising.The number of bursaries available depends on the course. Up to two are available for each qualification course; only one bursary will be awarded per organisation per course. 

Regional and Special Interest Groups may also offer discretionary financial support to their members – please contact these groups for more information on this funding.

Application Process

The application process for our bursaries is managed by the professional development team. Please be aware that not all bursary applications are successful and the decisions are final and not subject to appeal.

Students will only be awarded one bursary to help towards the cost of their course and only one bursary will be awarded per organisation per course.  

Completion of Application form

The application form seeks to establish the financial circumstances of the organisation, and will contain a written personal summary. If applicable, we will forward the application form to the relevant regional/national and/or interest groups.

To apply, complete the Bursary Application Form and return via email only to academy@ciof.org.uk.

Please note the bursaries are awarded up to a value of £250 per successful candidate for the Certificate in Fundraising, up to a value of £350 per successful candidate for the Diploma in Fundraising and up to a value of £450 per successful candidate for the International Advanced Diploma in Fundraising. Preference will be given to small charities (with an income of under £1mil) and self-funding individuals. The application deadline is 6 weeks before the start date* of the qualification you are applying for.

*The start date refers to the first live teaching session (for virtual delivery) or the first self-study week (for online delivery). 

Assessment

Our professional development team or groups will assess all bursary applications. This may involve the regional or national group, and/or interviewing applicants over the telephone to review the applicant’s details and to ensure the information has been correctly interpreted and the assessment has been fair.

Award

Once a decision has been reached, applicants will be informed of the outcome, and (if successful) the value of their award. Successful applicants are then required to agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Bursary before it is awarded.

Bursaries are only valid for 12 months from the date awarded.
