Sir Lenny Henry

Lenny is one of Britain’s best known comedians, as well as a writer, philanthropist and award-winning actor. He co-founded Comic Relief in 1985 and has been one of the driving forces behind Comic Relief’s growth right from the very beginning. He was a trustee for over 27 years and in 2017, Lenny became an Honorary Life President of Comic Relief.

Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Comedy Awards in 2003, Lenny went on to win Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his portrayal of Othello in 2009. Subsequently he has appeared in A Comedy of Errors, FENCES and numerous other productions to critical acclaim.

Lenny is also an energetic and strong advocate for diversity and representation, using his voice to give talks on the subject all over the world. He has been a Trustee of the National Theatre since February 2016 and was awarded a Knighthood in 2015 for services to drama and charity. In 2018, the BBC broadcast The Lenny Henry Birthday Show, looking back on Lenny’s career to commemorate his 60th birthday.
