A message from Dhivya O'Connor, Interim Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising

Dear members,

I am writing to you, a valued member of the Chartered Institute, during turbulent times for our organisation and the community that we love so much. You may have seen our correspondence over the past few months about the handling of sexual harassment allegations or read headlines in charity sector press.

First and foremost, it has been an immensely difficult time for those affected by sexual harassment or abuse in our sector. Our Board of Trustees reiterates its apology to the women who have been let down by the Chartered Institute of Fundraising and to everyone who has been upset, frustrated, and angry in relation to the recent reports.

In the lead up to our Annual General Meeting on Monday 5 July and as we search for a new Chair, we recognise that we need to address our failings of the past and present. We are urgently addressing a number of issues that will make us a better membership organisation: better and safer for anyone who experiences, witnesses or stands up against harassment, abuse or discrimination.

At the heart of this are our members and groups. We cannot do this without you, and I wanted to reach out to you personally to let you know we want to listen to you.

I have faith that together we will come out the other side, a stronger sector that puts witnesses and survivors at the forefront of our approach and investigations. As your Interim CEO, I am committed to pursuing that outcome. It is vitally important that you have a membership body that truly supports you, as you fundraise for a better world.

We want to hear from you on how we can improve and we want to answer your questions. We might not have all the answers right now, but we are committed to listening carefully and taking positive action.

Now is the opportunity for members and volunteers to have their say. Some have already given constructive feedback and we welcome more of this – this is your Chartered Institute.

As a first step, in the coming weeks we will open a member survey to examine our member offering and operations. Please do use the opportunity to tell us how you feel, to feed into the future direction of the Chartered Institute.

In addition, our Board of Trustees have committed to holding a series of roundtables across the UK over the summer, to shape our thinking. More details will be provided in due course, as well as updates on the appointment of a new Chair and as we deliver our Action Plan.

In the meantime, our channels are always open to hear your thoughts. We look forward to hearing from you.
